Narsapur Crochet Lace - Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh is home to a number of crafts passed down through generations, some of which are home-based vocations like making crochet lace. Crochets are handcrafted with cotton thread and originated in Narsapur, Andhra Pradesh's West Godavari region. Narsapur is located on the Godavari River's bank, and it is said that approximately 150 years ago, the women of this region's agricultural population began producing exquisite artefacts out of colourful lace. In 2004, the first lace park of its type in India opened here, allowing hundreds of crochet lace artisans to sell their craft.

“This delicate 15th century thread craft came into India along with the missionary nuns. Narsapur in West Godavari dt of Andhra Pradesh became one of the main hubs for lace craft. This appealed to the women folk as they could earn a living staying at home. With just thread and hook they could create beautiful products.” - S Ranjana
